Tasting profile
Rich, layered nose of ripe black cherry, plum, garrigue (herbs), licorice, and subtle roasted meat. Palate is plush and mouthfilling, with velvety tannins, flavors of raspberry, cherry liqueur, dried figs, black pepper, spice box, and hints of olive tapenade and tobacco leaf. Long, savory finish with evolving earthiness.
Evolution: Fruit flavors are developing into more dried and stewed characteristics with accentuated spice, truffle, leather, and forest floor nuances. Signature ‘garrigue’ and meaty notes deepen. Tannins soften, acid presents as subtle lift.
At peak: Expect a harmonious interplay of dried red and black fruits, fine leather, cedar, baking spices, and a persistent, seamless finish—complex and savory, with tertiary aromas fully integrated by peak years.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium; sufficient to maintain freshness and support continued development
- Tannins
- Firm, now largely integrated with a supple texture but still providing backbone
- Alcohol
- 14.5%-15% ABV (typical for vintage and style), well integrated
- Aging potential
- 25-30 years from vintage for top examples, especially from a ripe year like 2009
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2019 to 2034
- Optimal window
- 2014 to 2037
- Current status
- Fully mature and drinking beautifully; can age further
- Current condition
- The wine is in excellent condition, with tannins resolved and tertiary complexity emerging. No notable signs of decline.
The peak window (2019-2029) reflects the wine’s ideal balance between mature fruit and well-integrated structure. At this stage, the tannins are fully resolved, and the wine expresses both primary and secondary/tertiary complexity, hallmark traits of well-aged Châteauneuf-du-Pape from an excellent, ripe vintage like 2009. Beyond 2029-2034, further aging will yield additional tertiary notes, but the risk for declining fruit intensity and increased oxidative character rises. After peak, the wine will become more earthy, fully tertiary, and may lose vibrancy.
Food pairing
Classic pairings include roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison, cassoulet, grilled or braised beef, duck with cherry or fig sauce, and Provençal cuisine. Mature examples pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, aged hard cheeses, and wild game. As the wine ages further, opt for earthy stews, truffle risotto, and game pies.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
