2011 was an excellent vintage in the Douro. This wine was crafted for early to mid-term drinking and shows classic structure with Douro signature. Its blend profile (with a dash of Syrah for complexity) means it is full-bodied but not overly tannic. At 13 years old, it expresses both fruit and evolved tertiary flavors. It will remain enjoyable for a few more years but is not intended for extended aging like vintage Port.
Food pairing
Pairs well with roasted meats (lamb, pork), grilled vegetables, braised beef, hard cheeses, and tomato-based dishes.
Serving
- Decant
- Yes (30 minutes) — The wine is 14 years old, which allows for some sediment to have formed. Decanting will help separate the sediment and enhance the wine's aromas and flavors by allowing it to breathe.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 5/10
Quinta do Noval has taken increased measures towards vineyard sustainability over past decade: integration of cover crops, reduction of chemical usage, support for native biodiversity, and ongoing trial of water conservation strategies. However, at the time this vintage was produced, such efforts were in early stages and not certified by external bodies.
Quinta do Noval is a benchmark Douro producer, and the estate’s Cedro do Noval shows some steps towards improved sustainability but lacks third-party certification for this vintage. Farming in 2011 was largely conventional, with increased attention to environmental stewardship but not to the stricter standards of certified sustainable or organic producers. Packaging is standard for the region (glass, natural cork), and carbon footprint is heightened if consumed far from Portugal. In recent years, the winery has pushed towards more holistic practices, but in 2011, sustainability was a work in progress and not a major differentiator by international standards.
