Tasting profile

Aromas of blackcurrant, black plum, cedar, tobacco, licorice, vanilla, and toasty new oak, with spicy undertones. Palate is structured, dense, and layered, showing dark fruits, espresso, fine tannins, and a persistent finish.

Evolution: Displays a transition from robust fruit and new oak to more integrated, tertiary notes (cedar, dried herbs, earth), with greater finesse and harmony in mid-to-late evolution.

At peak: Peak complexity between 2026-2030, with tertiary notes of sandalwood, forest floor, and truffle developing alongside fully integrated fruit.

Blecua is the flagship cuvée from Viñas del Vero’s Blecua estate, produced only in top years. Its meticulous selection and Bordeaux-inspired blend—aged around 20 months in new French barrels—grants significant structure and depth. The 2016 vintage is highly regarded in Northern Spain: slow, balanced ripening yields wines of polish and longevity. These factors, alongside historical bottle performance, support an optimal window beginning in the wine’s 8th year and lasting beyond 15 years from vintage.

Food pairing

Pair with lamb shoulder, aged beef ribeye, venison with red wine reduction, roast suckling pig, hearty stews, and aged Manchego or Zamorano cheese.

Sustainability

Sustainability score: 6/10

Viñas del Vero implements integrated pest management, judicious water management (drip irrigation), solar energy expansion, and programs to reduce chemical interventions. Lightened bottle weight used for local lines, but Blecua’s flagship is in a premium heavy bottle. Ongoing transition to more renewable energy across the group.

The Blecua estate and Viñas del Vero operate with above-average sustainability awareness for the region. Their best practices include IPM, water conservation in a challenging climate, and some renewable energy, resulting in a lower-than-average impact for premium Spanish red. Blecua is not certified organic/biodynamic, and its flagship status means a heavier glass bottle and new French oak (both increase environmental cost). Overall, a responsible Spanish estate moving toward improved sustainability, but with ongoing areas for improvement.
