Tasting profile
Intense aromas of black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, cassis, and subtle vanilla and baking spices from oak aging. Palate is dense with concentrated dark fruits, firm tannins, hints of graphite, and a long, polished finish.
Evolution: With time, fruit concentration will integrate further with oak influence, tannins will round out becoming silky, and secondary notes of leather, tobacco, cedar, and earth will develop.
At peak: At peak, expect complex layered aromas, smooth tannic structure, deep, refined fruit expression, and an elegant yet powerful finish.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium-plus acidity providing balance and freshness to the ripe fruit and dense tannins; supports long-term aging
- Tannins
- Robust, well-structured, firmly grippy tannins typical of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at release; currently somewhat tight but poised to soften
- Alcohol
- Moderate to high (~14.5-15.0% ABV) well integrated, contributing to the wine's fullness without overpowering
- Aging potential
- Excellent, with the potential to age gracefully 15+ years from vintage with proper cellaring
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2028 to 2042
- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2045
- Current status
- Needs aging, approaching early drinkability
- Current condition
- Youthful structure with firm tannins and vibrant acidity; best cellar conditions recommended
The 2017 vintage in Napa Valley was excellent, producing ripe, structured Cabernet Sauvignon with balanced acidity and ripe tannins. The grape maturity and oak aging create a wine that demands early cellaring to soften tannins and integrate flavors. The peak window from about 2028 to 2035 reflects the time needed to fully develop tertiary characteristics, soften tannins, and achieve a harmonious balance. After the peak, gradual decline in fruit vibrancy occurs, but the wine will remain enjoyable with evolved complexity through 2040.
Food pairing
Pairs well with rich grilled or roasted red meats such as ribeye steak, lamb chops, and venison. Also excellent with mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses like aged Manchego or Comté, and dishes with savory herbs like rosemary and thyme. As it evolves, pairs well with braised beef short ribs or duck breast with berry reductions.
