Tasting profile
Opulent, deep aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, tobacco leaf, grilled herbs and dark chocolate, with hints of graphite and smoky earth. Palate is plush, concentrated, and silky, with mature tannins and savory complexity. Tertiary flavors of leather, cigar box, and autumn undergrowth mingle with sweet, ripe dark fruit. Long, persistent finish.
Evolution: Originally exuberantly fruity and bold, now showing more secondary (cedar, tobacco, graphite) and tertiary (forest floor, leather) notes. Fruit shifting from blackberry/cassis to plum, prune, and fig, balanced by earthy and savory undertones.
At peak: At peak, the wine delivers harmonious integration of fruit, oak, and savory complexity. Balance of fruit and tertiary elements, plush texture, lingering finish, and expressive aromatics.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium; sufficient for freshness but lower than in cooler years, giving early suppleness
- Tannins
- Firm, moderately resolved; still present with a velvety texture providing structure without harshness
- Alcohol
- High (typically 13.5-14.5% for the vintage); seamlessly integrated with age
- Aging potential
- 30 years from vintage in top condition; most bottles will hold to 2032, great provenance could see extension to 2035+
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2015 to 2033
- Optimal window
- 2010 to 2036
- Current status
- Ready now; drinking at maturity but can hold for a decade
- Current condition
- At or near peak; mature but robust structure remains. Elegant tertiary notes present with the fruit still intact.
The 2003 vintage was extremely warm, yielding wines with softer acidity and supple tannins. Smith Haut Lafitte, a leading Graves estate, produced a robust, fruit-driven wine with solid structure that has developed secondary and tertiary complexity after nearly two decades. Its current peak (2015-2027) is driven by the optimal balance of mature tannins, integrated fruit, and evolving earth and spice notes, before fruit fades and tertiary notes fully dominate. After 2027, expect more marked tertiary evolution and subtle softening of fruit, particularly if cellaring conditions are imperfect.
Food pairing
Best with roasted or grilled lamb, ribeye steak, duck breast, or beef tenderloin with Bordeaux-style sauces. Also excellent alongside roast game birds or hard aged cheeses (Comté, Manchego, Pecorino). As the wine matures further, pair with earthy mushroom dishes or rich vegetable gratins.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
