Tasting profile
Aromatic with developed notes of dried plum, black cherry, truffle, cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle underbrush. Palate is supple, with polished tannins, mellowed oak, and a long, earth-driven finish.
Evolution: Primary fruit faded; now showing classic tertiary Pomerol complexity—sous bois, cigar box, earthy minerality.
At peak: Fully expressive, velvety texture, harmonious and nuanced. Ideal expression of mature right bank Bordeaux second wine in top vintage.

While Fugue de Nénin is a second wine and intended for earlier consumption than the Grand Vin, the superb 2005 vintage endows it with extra structure and longevity. High quality, careful winemaking, and the Merlot/Franc blend characteristic of Pomerol mean this 2005 can age 20-23 years in great conditions, drinking beautifully from about 2016 and likely holding its peak attributes into 2028 (longer than most second wines from lesser vintages).
Food pairing
Best with roast duck, lamb shoulder, beef bourguignon, wild mushroom risotto, or truffle cheese. Also excellent alongside hard aged cheeses or classic cassoulet.
Serving

Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Integrated pest management (lutte raisonnée) implemented at Nénin in early 2000s. Steps taken toward natural cover crops, limited synthetic input, and manual harvesting to reduce carbon and chemical load, though not fully certified organic/biodynamic at this time. Glass bottle weight moderate; some use of lightweight glass in later years.
In 2005, Château Nénin was in the early phases of modern sustainability efforts, using lutte raisonnée to reduce chemicals and promote biodiversity. No official eco-certifications for the 2005 vintage, but the estate has moved toward HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and greener practices since 2014. For the 2005, moderate sustainability credentials with responsible but not exemplary practices compared to modern leading estates. Packaging and transport typical for Bordeaux, so overall sustainability is above average for mid-2000s but not at the cutting edge. Score of 6 is due to limited certifications but evidence of responsible farming for the era.
