Tasting profile

Intense red cherry, dried plum, strawberry, balsamic and savory notes; dried flowers, light tobacco, leather, baking spice, gentle earthy undertones. Still energetic, layered, and finishing with persistent acidity.

Evolution: Gains more pronounced tertiary notes: forest floor, cedar, sweet spice, subtle cured meat, truffle and dried herbs. Fruit becomes more integrated, tannins silkier.

At peak: Total harmony of fruit, acidity, and evolved umami/savory complexity around 2027-2035. The wine will maintain elegance, freshness, and intensity through peak years.

Viña Bosconia Reserva is famed for its extended aging even prior to release and old-vine fruit from López de Heredia’s unique, limestone-rich vineyards. The 2014 vintage combined structure and finesse, lending itself to the estate’s unparalleled longevity. As with all top Rioja Reservas from this producer, 20–30 year aging is the norm; the wine will hold and develop beautifully, especially from a strong, classical year like 2014.

Food pairing

Grilled lamb chops, roast duck, Ibérico pork, mature Manchego or aged sheep’s cheese, wild mushroom dishes, Spanish-style braised beef, oxtail stew, charcuterie, or rich vegetarian lentil stews.

Sustainability

Sustainability score: 8/10

Dry-farming, no irrigation, minimal chemical usage (no herbicides, hand-tended vineyards for over a century), use of estate-sourced oak for barrel production, traditional methods with minimal intervention, longevity of bottles and reusable packaging.

López de Heredia is a paragon of multigenerational, holistic farming. Vineyards are dry-farmed with minimal chemical input, farmed by hand, and the estate grows its own oak for barrels. Packaging is traditional (often heavier bottles), and no formal sustainability or organic certification is claimed, but real-world practices are in many respects equivalent to certified sustainable operations. The estate’s long-life wines reduce consumption frequency, and use of local forest oak is environmentally positive. However, global transport and traditional (heavy) glass increase the footprint. Overall, this is one of the world’s most authentically sustainable classic estates without headline certifications.
