Tasting profile
Expressive red and black fruits (cherry, wild berry), dried herbs, stones, garrigue, delicate floral top notes. Minerality and lifted acidity overlay fine structure.
Evolution: With age: More pronounced earth, sous-bois, tobacco, dried flowers, spice, mushroom. Fruit softens, tertiary and mineral notes dominate.
At peak: Finesse-driven, complex aromatics; harmonious fruit, mineral, and earthy layers; silky tannins and long, vibrant finish.

- Aging potential
- Exceptional: 20-30 years from vintage due to old vines, meticulous winemaking, and balance. 2020 vintage especially structured, long-lived.

Antonio Madeira works with some of the oldest vines in Dão, often 80-120+ years old, in the granitic soils of the Serra da Estrela. The A Centenária cuvée comes from a single, centenarian (>100 year old), co-planted vineyard, naturally farmed and minimally handled. 2020 was a ripe but balanced year. These factors, together with classic Portuguese field blend tannin and acid backbone, make this a 20-30 year wine, with peak maturity expected 10-20 years post-vintage (2029-2040+).
Food pairing
Traditional roast lamb with garlic and herbs, wild mushroom risotto, grilled quail, roasted root vegetables, Portuguese bacalhau (salt cod) with extra-virgin olive oil, or mature sheep cheese (Serra da Estrela).
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (2+ hours (for 2024-2028), 30-60 minutes (from 2030+)) — To allow reduction and structure to integrate, release full aromatic complexity, and soften the wine's youthful tannin.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 9/10
Dry-farmed, old-vine bush-trained vineyards; manual viticulture with biodiversity emphasis; no synthetic herbicides/pesticides; hand harvesting; low-intervention in winery (native yeasts, minimal SO2); long-lived glass bottles with natural cork closure.
Antonio Madeira is a leader in natural and sustainable viticulture in Dão: dry-farming, preserving biodiversity in ancient vineyards, zero systemic chemicals, cover-cropping, manual viticulture, and low-intervention winemaking. While not formally certified, his practices go beyond most 'sustainable' designations, though intercontinental shipping adds some carbon. Packaging is traditional (heavy bottles, cork), so lighter bottles would improve sustainability further. Overall viticulture is close to benchmark organic/biodynamic operations.
