Centenária comes from centenarian (100+ year-old) vines with a unique patchwork of native varieties, yielding remarkable complexity, energy, and ageworthiness. The 2020 is a structured but refined vintage, promising graceful evolution over two decades. Top “garagiste” style, old-vine Dão reds are among Portugal’s most age-worthy wines.

Roast lamb with wild herbs, duck breast, grilled game birds, mushroom risotto, Portuguese chanfana (slow-cooked goat), charcuterie, hard sheep cheeses. Avoid heavily spiced/sweet dishes that may overpower its finesse.

Sustainability
Sustainability score: 8/10
Manual harvest; dry-farming (no irrigation), compost-based fertilization, cover cropping, and biodiversity preservation with indigenous flora; gravity-fed winery minimizes energy use; very limited SO2 addition
Antonio Madeira is a dedicated practitioner of low-intervention, old-vine viticulture in Dão, Portugal. While not officially certified organic, his viticulture avoids systemic chemicals, embraces native biodiversity, and minimizes external inputs. Vineyard work is largely manual and energy use in the gravity-fed cellar is minimal. But as with many premium artisanal European producers, lack of formal certification keeps the score below a perfect ten, and long-distance bottle export for this cult wine does add some carbon considerations. Still, this is among the Dão’s most environmentally conscientious estates.
