This wine is a benchmark for ageworthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The oldest vines (some over 80 years old) on the galet-strewn La Crau plateau produce deep, structured reds with legendary longevity and complexity. The 2023 is expected to follow suit, with optimal drinking from 8–17 years after harvest, but will hold longer in excellent cellars.

Food pairing

Pair with roasted lamb, duck confit, game meats, cassoulet, aged hard cheeses, and Provençal cuisine.

Serving

Decant
Yes (30 minutes) — The wine has firm, structured tannins that can benefit from aeration to soften and integrate, enhancing its flavors and aromas.

Sustainability

Sustainability score: 8/10

Long-standing dry farming; no herbicides or synthetic pesticides; organic viticulture; manual harvest; vine plowing by horse to reduce compaction; use of lightweight glass bottles; solar energy in cellar; biodiversity maintained in and around vineyards.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe has embraced certified organic farming practices since 2019, eliminating synthetic inputs. The estate uses dry-farming and biodiversity-friendly viticulture. Water use is minimized due to naturally dry region/drip irrigation only for young vines. Energy use in winemaking incorporates renewables. Packaging initiatives (lighter bottles) further reduce emissions. While international export raises their carbon footprint, their efforts in vineyard and winery sustainability and community initiatives consistently place them in the upper echelon (8/10) of Rhône Valley and classic French producers. Biodynamic or climate-positive certifications would increase score further.
