Tasting profile
Complex tertiary nose with notes of dried blackberries, leather, tobacco, black olive, earth, dried violets, forest floor, and subtle smoky spice. Palate is smooth and integrated, with fading fruit and savory notes dominating. Finish may be shorter, though can still be elegant in top bottles.
Evolution: Evolved from primary dark fruit, pepper, and floral notes in youth to a more savory, earthy, and leathery profile with dried fig and balsamic notes over time.
At peak: At peak, showed impressive balance of dark fruit, peppery spice, floral lift, and ripe tannins—a rare Syrah with both power and finesse reminiscent of top Rhône examples, but with New World polish.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium, sufficient for aging but starting to soften considerably
- Tannins
- Medium, now resolved and silky
- Alcohol
- 13-14% ABV (typical for South African Syrah of this era)
- Aging potential
- Originally substantial (20+ years for top vintages), but nearing or past maximum development window
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2007 to 2015
- Optimal window
- 2005 to 2017
- Current status
- At peak or just past peak, depending on cellaring
- Current condition
- The 1997 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is now 27 years old. Properly stored bottles can still be excellent, displaying fully mature aromas and tertiary development. However, drinking past peak is likely for most bottles, and there is a risk of fading fruit and emerging oxidative notes. High quality and reputation means some well-stored bottles may still be captivating, but optimal drinking was likely between 2010 and 2017. Enjoy soon if not already consumed.
This wine is among the foundational South African Syrahs that demonstrated Old World styling and exceptional age-worthiness. 1997 is now a mature vintage, with bottles at or past their optimal window. Well-cellared examples can continue to offer profound mature Syrah character, though most are likely slightly over peak unless exceptionally stored. Drinking windows are supported by historical cellaring results and expert commentary.
Food pairing
Aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda), roast lamb, venison, mushroom risotto, charcuterie. Avoid overpowering sauces or acidic dishes that could overpower the wine's delicacy.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (30-45 minutes (gentle decant)) — Decant gently to separate from sediment and allow brief aeration to open mature aromas, but avoid prolonged exposure which may cause fragile aromas to dissipate.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 7/10
Boekenhoutskloof is known for sustainable viticulture, reduction of chemical inputs, careful vineyard water management, and encouragement of biodiversity in surrounding fynbos habitats. The winery has increasingly implemented solar energy and lightweight bottle initiatives in more recent years; historical data for 1997 shows early adoption of eco-sensitive practices for the region.
In 1997, Boekenhoutskloof was at the forefront of South Africa's quality movement, with pioneering sustainable practices by local standards—though not meeting modern organic certification. The winery's commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible farming, and maintaining fynbos biodiversity earns it high marks relative to its era. However, overseas shipping for global collectors and traditional glass packaging limit its maximum sustainability rating. More recent vintages show further progression toward sustainability.
