Tasting profile
Complex aromas of dried cherry, leather, tobacco, sandalwood, balsamic and integrated oak spice. Palate is smooth, velvety, mid-weight, with evolved red fruit, earthy truffle, cedar, and elegant savory undertones.
Evolution: Primary fruit has evolved into dried and stewed tones, savory tertiary bouquet, gentle oak persists. Tannins fully resolved, acidity supports freshness.
At peak: Most bottles have peaked but will drink well for a few more years if properly stored. Expect more earth and dried fruit going forward; some vibrancy remains.

Rioja Reservas, especially Selección wines from strong producers, are commonly aged at the winery and released with secondary/Tertiary development, but continue to evolve for 20+ years. Structural acidity and quality oak framework of Altanza's best parcels support aging. The 2001 vintage was exceptional in Rioja, granting added longevity. Most bottles are in final 5-6 years of peak maturity.
Food pairing
Braised lamb shank, suckling pig, roast duck, ibérico pork, Manchego cheese, wild mushroom risotto, aged beef, classic Spanish dishes like Rioja-style lamb stew.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (30-45 minutes) — Gently aerates the wine, softens remaining tannins, and helps express complex bouquet. Older bottles: decant off sediment only, serve without extended exposure.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Bodegas Altanza employs some modern sustainable agriculture: integrated pest management, drip irrigation to minimize water, partial renewable energy usage, and lighter bottle packaging in recent years. For the 2001 vintage, these were in early adoption stages; focus was on quality but not explicitly eco-certified.
Bodegas Altanza has strengthened its sustainability efforts in the 2010s and 2020s, but the 2001 vintage was produced before widespread organic/eco-certification and major environmental initiatives in Rioja. Current vineyard management is more sustainable, but early 2000s wines were not certified organic or biodynamic. Overall, the carbon footprint is average for imported Spanish wine, with some improvements in viticulture/packaging by the producer in later years. Net: moderate sustainability relative to traditional peers, but not a benchmark for eco-friendly production.
