Tasting profile
Aromas of ripe dark cherries, cassis, graphite, balsamic herbs, cocoa, and cedar; palate is plush and complex with black fruit, tobacco, dark chocolate, and a long, savory finish. Silky tannins and well-knit structure.
Evolution: Moving from primary black fruit and spice into secondary and tertiary territory: dried herbs, leather, forest floor, and mineral tones.
At peak: At peak now and for the next decade—expect more autumnal notes, velvety texture, and increased savory complexity as the wine ages.

- Alcohol
- 14.0%-14.5% ABV (typical for Ornellaia 2009 bottlings)
- Aging potential

- Optimal window
- 2015 to 2049
- Current status

Ornellaia is a flagship Super Tuscan with proven aging capability in strong vintages. The 2009 is a structured, balanced, and powerful wine, crafted to mature for two to three decades. This drinking window is supported by comparisons to 1990s vintages and consensus among major critics (Parker, Vinous, Suckling, WS) who suggest optimal drinking up to 2035. The wine's depth, tannin quality, and acidity provide long-term cellaring potential.
Food pairing
Florentine steak (Bistecca alla Fiorentina), aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano), braised short ribs, wild boar ragù, grilled lamb, and mushroom risotto.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (1-2 hours) — To open aromatics and soften tannins, and to allow secondary and tertiary notes to fully emerge.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Integrated vineyard management focused on reduced pesticide use, manual harvest, cover cropping, water conservation through drip irrigation and deficit strategies, increasing use of natural fertigation. Some moves toward lighter bottle glass and recycled packaging, mainly post-2016. Solar energy implemented at the estate (post-2009).
Ornellaia, while committed to sustainability, did not have formal organic or biodynamic certification in 2009. The estate followed sustainable farming techniques with an emphasis on biodiversity and efficient resource use, but much of its significant progress in packaging and renewable energy came later. The carbon footprint is typical of high-end, globally shipped wines, especially for older vintages in heavy glass bottles. While on the path to improved sustainability, the 2009 vintage reflects industry norms of the era with initial moves toward environmental responsibility.
