Tasting profile

Aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, violet, cedar, and subtle graphite. Palate offers ripe black fruit, red cherry, floral lift, gentle spice, and classic Margaux elegance. Oak is integrated; finish is long and persistent.

Evolution: With age, primary black fruit gives way to tobacco, cedar, sandalwood, forest floor, and truffle. Structure becomes silkier, acidity keeps it fresh, complex tertiary notes emerge.

At peak: At peak, expect seamless fruit and secondary savory/earth character, remarkable aromatic complexity, velvety tannins, and persistent, harmonious finish.

Structure

Acidity
Medium to medium-high; supporting freshness and longevity.
Tannins
Firm, fine-grained; becoming more approachable but still youthful.
Alcohol
13-13.5% ABV; well integrated, not dominant.
Aging potential
30+ years from vintage (2012-2042+), consistent with First Growth Bordeaux.

Drinking window

Peak drinking
2027 to 2044
Optimal window
2022 to 2047
Current status
Entering optimal drinking window; approachable now with decanting but will improve further.
Current condition
Youthful but open; tannins have started to resolve, and core of dark fruit is expressive. Still has significant structure for further aging.

2012 is an elegant, harmonious vintage in Margaux—more accessible than blockbuster years yet with classic balance and refinement. The structure supports slow evolution; by mid-late 2020s tannins soften, and aromatic complexity blossoms, delivering a classic matured Margaux profile. After 2037, while still drinkable, fruit intensity gently recedes, and tertiary notes become dominant; wine slowly loses some freshness beyond 2042 but remains enjoyable for lovers of old Bordeaux.

Food pairing

Classic pairings: roast lamb (rack or saddle), grilled duck breast, beef Wellington, filet mignon with truffle jus, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gruyère). At peak maturity, match with subtle game (venison, squab), porcini or black truffle dishes to highlight evolved aromatics.

Serving

Serving temperature
16-18°C / 61-64°F
Decant
Yes (2 hours) — Opens aromatics, softens tannins, and reveals layered complexity in youth; at maturity (post-2030), decant gently for sediment removal and moderate aeration.
