Tasting profile
Vivid red cherries, black raspberries, and crushed rose petals with hints of violets, menthol, and licorice. Subtle oak spice (subdued new wood), graphite, and a mineral core. Tannins still youthful but velvet-textured; powerful yet refined.
Evolution: Over the next 5-10 years, the fruit will darken and tertiary flavors will emerge: dried cherry, forest floor, tobacco leaf, truffle, leather, and balsamic notes; floral and tar aromas intensify. Texture softens and becomes more harmonious.
At peak: At peak, expect explosive aromatic complexity, sweetness of mature fruit, integrated tannins, and seamless balance. Tertiary notes will mingle with lingering minerality, offering classic Cerequio perfume and depth.
Structure
- Acidity
- High, providing freshness and terrific longevity; hallmark of great Barolo
- Tannins
- High, beautifully ripe and fine-grained; beginning to resolve but still present—classic Voerzio intensity
- Alcohol
- 14.5% (balanced by extract and fruit concentration; well integrated with air)
- Aging potential
- Outstanding—25-35 years from vintage is realistic, especially aided by the generous structure and the 2015 vintage's quality
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2027 to 2052
- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2055
- Current status
- Drink or cellar—just entering its first maturity plateau, but will evolve beautifully for decades
- Current condition
- Youthful but opening up; tannins integrating, highly aromatic with emerging tertiary complexity. No rush, but rewarding now if well-aerated.
The window from 2027–2037 is when fruit, tannin resolution, tertiary complexity, and aromatic lift converge at a sublime point. Earlier, power and youth predominate; later, subtlety and tertiary notes take over. The 2015 vintage is structured and ripe, extending the overall window, but the wine’s density and precision mean it can age gracefully until 2045 or longer without risk of drying out or fatigue.
Food pairing
Classic pairing: Slow-braised Piedmontese beef (brasato al Barolo), wild mushroom risotto, tagliatelle with truffle or game sauces, roast lamb, or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. As the wine matures, pairings with earthy dishes (porcini, polenta, roast root vegetables), mature cheeses, and white truffles become even more sublime.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (2-3 hours) — To help youthful tannins open up and aromas express themselves; essential for wines under 10 years old.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 7/10
Low yields, hand-harvested fruit, organic viticulture principles (no synthetic herbicides/pesticides), cover cropping; focus on biodiversity and soil health
Voerzio emphasizes minimal intervention and sustainable practices, with a strong environmental focus but no formal certification. Lower yields benefit quality, though energy use for worldwide distribution is nontrivial.
