Tasting profile

Dense black cherry, plum, cassis, graphite, licorice, and sweet toast/spice from French oak. Hints of espresso, dark chocolate, and earth. Vibrant and concentrated.

Evolution: With bottle age, will develop greater aromatic complexity (dried fruits, tobacco, truffle, leather, cedar); tannins will soften, texture will become more velvety.

At peak: Polished black fruit layered with mocha, cigar box, and mineral notes; incredibly harmonious, with secondary earth and spice nuances.

Alión, by Tempos Vega Sicilia, is among Ribera del Duero's elite wines, built for longevity. The 2020 vintage is powerful, ripe, and structured, easily rivaling classified growth Bordeaux in cellaring potential—especially in this fine, balanced vintage. It will hit full stride after 5-8 years and retain peak quality for close to a decade beyond, thanks to its dense fruit and fine tannins.

Food pairing

Ideal with grilled lamb chops, dry-aged steaks, Iberico pork, roast suckling pig, wild mushroom dishes, or hard Spanish cheeses (Manchego, Zamorano). Earthy stews and braised meats also excellent.

Decant
Yes (1-2 hours) — Decanting softens firm tannins and allows complex aromas to emerge from youthful density.

Sustainability

Sustainability score: 7/10

Alión employs drip irrigation for water efficiency, vineyard cover crops for biodiversity, minimal herbicide and pesticide use, and selective hand harvesting. Integrated pest management and soil conservation practices are in place. The winery uses high-efficiency lighting and energy-saving equipment, and has initiatives for recycling and lighter glass bottles.

Tempos Vega Sicilia is recognized among Spain's most forward-thinking wineries for sustainability, but does not pursue organic or biodynamic certification due to vintage risk tolerance and tradition. Vineyard and winery practices reflect a strong commitment to land stewardship, resource conservation, and environmental impact reduction, but the use of international distribution increases carbon footprint versus local/regional wines. Overall, Alión scores well above average for high-end Ribera del Duero, but could improve further with formal certifications and greater transparency.
