Tasting profile
Ripe blackcurrant, cassis, plum, and blackberry upfront. Secondary notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, subtle green pepper, vanilla, and baking spice from oak aging. Medium-full body, fresh acidity, robust tannin.
Evolution: Over time, primary fruit will recede, giving way to more integrated oak-derived notes, leather, forest floor, and dried herbs. Tannins will soften, mouthfeel will become rounder and smoother.
At peak: At peak, expect greater harmony between fruit, tannin, and oak; a plush mid-palate with complex nuance of black fruit, cigar box, and savory undertones, silky tannins, and persistent finish.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium-high, providing freshness and good aging backbone
- Tannins
- Moderate to firm; slightly grainy currently, but starting to integrate and will soften over next 2-3 years
- Alcohol
- 13.5%-14% ABV; well-balanced for the style with no overt heat
- Aging potential
- 5-7 years from vintage; best consumed by 2028 for optimal expression
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2025 to 2027
- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2028
- Current status
- Approachable now, but will benefit from short-term aging
- Current condition
- Youthful with vibrant fruit, moderate tannic grip and fresh acidity; enjoyable now with decanting, but still integrating
The 2025-2027 window is peak as the tannins relax and integrate with remaining fresh fruit, and oak influence rounds out. Complexity increases without significant loss of freshness. After this period, fruit will decline and wine may show more muted, tertiary character, sacrificing vibrancy and balance.
Food pairing
Excellent with grilled or roasted red meats (ribeye, lamb chops), beef empanadas, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses (Manchego, Gruyère). Current profile pairs well with savory, herbaceous, and chargrilled dishes. As the wine ages and softens, it will work increasingly well with braised dishes, roasted vegetables, and milder hard cheeses.
Serving
- Decant
- Yes (30 minutes) — The wine has moderate to firm tannins that are slightly grainy but starting to integrate, which can benefit from aeration to enhance its flavors and soften the tannins.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 7/10
Integrated pest management, water conservation, reduced chemical inputs, and focus on biodiversity within estate vineyards.
Bodega Norton is recognized for responsible farming and environmental management within Mendoza. Their practices enhance sustainability but aren't at the forefront of fully organic/biodynamic methodologies. The estate's broad efforts place the wine above average for regional sustainability.
