Tasting profile
Expressive aromas of black plum, blueberry, violet, and subtle vanilla and mocha from oak aging. Palate is medium-bodied, with dark fruit, spice, and firm yet ripe tannins. Finish is vibrant and persistent.
Evolution: With cellaring (2-4 years), youthful black fruits integrate further with oak notes, evolving towards dried fig, leather, cocoa, and earthy nuances. Tannins soften and texture becomes silkier.
At peak: At peak (2025-2027), expect harmony between fruit, tannin, and oak, with layered flavors of dark berry, sweet tobacco, cedar, and supple mouthfeel. Great balance and depth for its class.
Structure
- Acidity
- Balanced, moderate; maintains freshness and aging capacity.
- Tannins
- Medium to medium-plus; currently prominent but approachable, will soften with 1-3 years further aging.
- Alcohol
- Integrated, typically 13.5-14.5% ABV; in harmony with fruit intensity.
- Aging potential
- 5-7 years from vintage (2026–2028)
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2025 to 2027
- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2028
- Current status
- Approachable now but benefits from short-term cellaring
- Current condition
- Fresh and vibrant, displaying young fruit and structured tannin. Drinking well but still developing secondary complexity.
2025-2027 is considered peak due to the anticipated full integration of tannins, development of attractive secondary flavors (earth, cedar, sweet spice), while maintaining residual fruit vibrancy. Leading up to peak, the wine evolves from a youthful, fruit-forward profile to greater complexity and smoothness. Post-peak, structure declines and fruit may fade, resulting in diminished vibrancy and a flatter profile.
Food pairing
Classic pairings: grilled beef, lamb, empanadas, or barbecue. Current profile complements chargrilled steaks, roast pork, and hard cheeses. As it matures, pairing with richer, stewed meats, braised short ribs, mushroom ragout, or aged cheeses becomes even more rewarding.
Serving
- Decant
- Yes (30 minutes) — The wine has medium to medium-plus tannins that are currently prominent but approachable. Decanting will help soften the tannins and enhance the wine's aromas and flavors.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 7/10
Sustainability in vineyard management, efficient water use, reduced chemical inputs, and social responsibility programs.
Bodega Norton demonstrates commitment to sustainable viticulture and community, but the Reserva line is not fully certified organic or carbon neutral. Good environmental practices contribute to overall sustainability but may lag behind top green benchmark producers.
