Tasting profile
Bright red cherry, wild strawberry, subtle tobacco leaf, baking spices, vanilla oak, dried herbs, and a trace of leather. Still primary with superb fruit freshness and classic Rioja balance.
Evolution: As it ages, expect the fruit to deepen, more dried fruits (fig, prune), increased leather, cedar, cigar box, savory earth, and sweeter spices; tannins become silkier.
At peak: Richly perfumed, harmonious, and velvety—classic mature Reserva Rioja elegantly combining ripe berry fruit, spice box, and evolved balsamic complexity.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium-plus, fresh backbone
- Tannins
- Medium, fine-grained
- Alcohol
- 14%
- Aging potential
- 8–15 years; traditional Ardanza bottlings behave very well in the cellar

- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2032
- Current status
- Early Drinking Window: youthful but accessible
- Current condition
- Approachable now, but will improve with further bottle age; primary/secondary flavors
Viña Ardanza Reserva traditionally matures gracefully, developing refined aromas and a silky, integrated palate between 7–12 years after vintage. The 2019 vintage is robust and lively, so optimal drinking aligns from 2026 but it is enjoyable earlier.
Food pairing
Excellent with roast lamb, suckling pig, game birds, grilled sausages, Spanish cheeses (Manchego), mushroom risotto, herb-rubbed pork loin, or classic tapas such as jamón ibérico and chorizo.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (45–60 minutes) — Young Rioja Reservas benefit from aeration to soften tannins, integrate oak, and fully open aromatic complexity.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 7/10
Integrated pest management, organic fertilizers, cover cropping, reduction of chemical herbicides, solar energy at the winery, water recycling, lighter glass bottles, local sourcing of materials when possible
La Rioja Alta S.A. is recognized for improving sustainability across estate operations, including reducing energy and water consumption, solar panel installations, eco-friendly vineyard practices, and steps toward more organic farming. No full organic/biodynamic certification for all wines, but significant progress toward a lower-impact model. The global distribution increases carbon footprint, but countered with lighter packaging and renewable energies at the production source.
