Tasting profile
Intensely aromatic with black cherry, plum, violet, licorice, and a subtle earthiness. Mouthwatering acidity, bright red and black fruit, slight savory and spice notes, firm but gentle tannins, excellent purity.
Evolution: Fruit will shift from primary black cherry/plum to dried cherry, fig, and leather. Acidity will round out; secondary notes of tobacco, forest floor, and sweet spice will develop. Tannins will integrate further, and the palate will gain softness.
At peak: At peak, expect seamless integration: vibrant yet softened acidity, lush but evolved fruit (dried cherry, balsamic hints), developed earthiness and spice. Powerful yet refined, with retained freshness and complexity.
Structure
- Acidity
- Markedly high and energetic; classic for Barbera, providing freshness and longevity with capacity to mellow over five to eight years
- Tannins
- Supple and moderate for the variety; finely grained and already integrated, providing good backbone without astringency
- Alcohol
- Medium-plus (14-15%), well integrated given the producer's skill, supporting richness without overpowering the palate
- Aging potential
- 7-10 years from vintage, reflecting high-quality fruit, structure, and the Conterno signature
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2025 to 2028
- Optimal window
- 2024 to 2030
- Current status
- Approachable now but will benefit from short-term cellaring
- Current condition
- Youthful, vibrant, primary fruit dominant with fresh acidity and robust structure
The 2025-2028 peak window reflects the maturation of primary fruit into nuanced, layered flavors without significant loss of freshness. This period aligns with optimal tannin integration and emergence of secondary notes, maximizing complexity and harmony. Beyond this, Barbera's moderate tannins and fruit-forward profile risk declining vibrancy and overt earthiness, reducing the wine's appeal.
Food pairing
Pair with classic Piedmontese fare such as agnolotti del plin, tajarin with ragù, or braised veal. Works beautifully with roast pork, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses like Castelmagno. As it matures, match to game birds, truffle-infused dishes, or braised beef. Younger bottles excel with tomato-based pastas and grilled sausages, while aged bottles crave richer, earthier pairings.
