The 1999 vintage was initially regarded as medium in quality, but Mouton Rothschild excelled. As a First Growth with immense structure, this wine evolves over decades. It is in its mature plateau (25 years old), displaying developed complexity while retaining enough structure to age further. Best bottles (ex-château/provenance) will show depth and plenty of life into the 2030s and beyond.
Food pairing
Roast lamb, rare beef, venison, roast duck, aged Comté or Gruyère, wild mushroom risotto, dishes with truffle, or simply on its own as a meditation wine.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (1-2 hours) — Recommended to remove mature sediment and allow delicate tertiary aromatics to emerge—do not over-decant, as older wines are more fragile.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Since the late 2010s, Mouton Rothschild has moved toward greater environmental sensitivity—cover cropping, minimal herbicide use, biodiversity encouragement, and solar panel installation. Most practices in 1999 were conventional, but by 2020, some plots are farmed organically, and the estate is moving toward broader sustainability goals.
Mouton Rothschild, like many top Bordeaux châteaux, has been traditional but is accelerating sustainability efforts, especially since 2015. The 1999 vintage itself was produced before most major environmental overhauls. The estate falls short of formal certification but demonstrates improving sustainable agriculture, resource management, and biodiversity. Carbon footprint remains high due to international transport and packaging. Current operations are on an improving trajectory, but historic production (1999) was not 'sustainable' by modern standards.
