Tasting profile

Mature aromas of dried cherry, plum, tobacco leaf, leather, balsamic, cedar, underbrush, hints of cured meat and subtle spice. Palate is savory, with softened tannins, moderate acidity, plush dark fruit and tertiary complexity.

Evolution: Fruit character has moved from ripe cherry/plum to dried and stewed notes, with pronounced earth, leather, and spice. Tannins soften further, acidity becomes more mellow, and aromatic complexity increases with bottle age.

At peak: At peak, expect seamless melding of fruit, earth, tobacco, and spice, with a lingering savory finish, very supple tannins and sustained power tempered by elegance.

Structure

Acidity
Medium to medium-plus; sufficient freshness, slightly softer than in top vintages due to the warm 2003 season.
Tannins
Firm but resolved, now integrated; moderate-grained tannins typical of aged Brunello from a warmer year.
Alcohol
High (14-14.5%), integrated but noticeable warmth from the hot vintage.
Aging potential
Good 20-30+ years from vintage for well-stored bottles; still robust, especially from reputable cellars.

Drinking window

Peak drinking
2015 to 2023
Optimal window
2008 to 2023
Current status
Mature, enjoyable now; holding well but at/near peak
Current condition
This wine is at full maturity, showing developed tertiary notes while maintaining structure and personality typical of Sangiovese from a warm, early-maturing vintage.

The warm and early 2003 vintage produced Brunello with generous fruit and softer acidity, leading to earlier peak maturity than more classic years. After ~15 years, the wine has gained tertiary complexity (leather, undergrowth, balsamic tones), while maintaining structure. From 2015-2025 it reaches its ideal balance of fruit and secondary/tertiary expression. Beyond 2025-2030, fruit core will fade more, with more emphasis on savory, earthy, and dried notes; stylish, but less vibrant and possibly shorter on finish.

Food pairing

Classic pairings include Florentine steak (bistecca alla fiorentina), wild boar ragù, aged pecorino, grilled lamb, roast duck, mushroom risotto, and truffled pasta. With current maturity, complements rich game birds, roast pork, or earthy lentil and bean stews.

Decant
Yes (1-2 hours) — Decanting helps remove sediment and allows full bouquet to emerge from aged bottle, softening and integrating mature flavors.

Sustainability

Sustainability score: 7/10

Integrated pest management, water/energy efficiency, biodiversity promotion, conversion to more organic methods in later years

Frescobaldi is a major Tuscan producer with established sustainability practices, especially in the last decade. 2003 vintage predates some of their more rigorous certifications, but environmental care and social responsibility were already significant company values.
