Tasting profile
Intense aromatics of dark cherry, dried fig, pipe tobacco, cedar, leather, cocoa, and sweet spices. Palate is deeply layered with resolved tannins, bright acidity, and savory earth notes. Finish is long, silky, and complex.
Evolution: Primary fruit has evolved into mature notes of dried berries, truffle, balsamic, incense. Tertiary flavors dominate but freshness remains.
At peak: Supple texture, coordinated structure, fully integrated oak. Peak bottles offer profound complexity with tertiary development while retaining drinkability.

This is a truly ageworthy Rioja made by one of Spain's top modernist bodegas, using meticulous fruit selection and extended barrel and bottle aging before release. Gran Reservas from Remírez de Ganuza—especially from excellent vintages like 2005—routinely show great vitality 25–35+ years from vintage. Unless improperly stored, the 2005 remains on plateau and will continue to drink well well into its fourth decade. This exceeds 'conservative' mainstream windows for Rioja due to both pedigree and vintage quality.
Food pairing
Perfect with slow-roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, ibérico pork, wild mushrooms, aged Manchego, or braised beef dishes. Pairs superbly with truffle-infused rice or oxtail stew.

- Decant
- Yes (90-120 minutes) — Necessary to allow mature aromas to fully unfold and gently aerate any bottle-aged notes, also to separate potential fine sediment.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Utilizes precise vineyard management, hand harvesting, manual sorting; employs significant oak usage; glass bottles (non-lightweight); limited public transparency on energy/water use; local labor prioritized.
Remírez de Ganuza employs some sustainable vineyard practices (selective harvesting, yield management), but does not pursue formal organic, biodynamic, or sustainability certifications. Producers in Rioja using traditional methods often maintain rich biodiversity and use little irrigation. However, the winery’s emphasis on luxury presentation (thick glass bottles, extended barrel regimes) and lack of public reporting on energy or water conservation modestly lowers its sustainability score. Carbon footprint is higher than average due to packaging, aging, and export. There is room for improvement if the bodega increases transparency and adopts certifiable sustainable practices.
