Tasting profile

Expressive nose of lavender, honeysuckle, ripe peach, apricot, and subtle white pepper; palate is lush with silky texture, accented by tropical fruit, lemon zest, and almond nuances

Evolution: Primary fruit and floral complexity at its zenith; richer honeyed and nutty undertones emerging with a softening of acidity

At peak: 2019–2023: Opulent aromatics with optimal freshness and balance; post-2024, will lose some vibrancy, showing more dried fruit and almond/honey complexity

Optimal window

Current status
Ready to drink
Current condition
Fully mature; enjoy soon for maximum aromatic freshness, but capable of holding briefly if properly stored

Condrieu, and particularly premium cuvées such as 'Invitare', are made to showcase Viognier’s aromatics and texture within 3–8 years. The 2016 vintage, now 8 years old, is fully mature—still aromatic and lush but will gradually shift into more savory, evolved tones if cellared longer. Viognier does not have the long aging capacity of top red Rhône or Burgundy whites; extended aging beyond 8–10 years is not recommended unless seeking tertiary notes.

Food pairing

Ideal with lobster in a light citrus sauce, scallops, roast chicken with tarragon, creamy cheeses (Brillat-Savarin, Chaource), Thai cuisine with ginger and lemongrass, or roasted pork tenderloin with apricot glaze

Hand harvesting, organic fertilizers, minimal use of chemicals, preservation of biodiversity, solar energy on estate, lightweight glass packaging, water recycling

M. Chapoutier is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture across its Rhône valley holdings.
