Tasting profile
Complex nose of wild blackberry, dark cherry, plum, anise, mocha, and subtle herbal undertones. The palate is generous, layered, with ripe black fruit, polished tannins, spicy oak, and balancing freshness.
Evolution: Primary fruit is softening, with developing notes of leather, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and dried Mediterranean herbs. Oak is well-integrated, and finish is elongated and elegant.
At peak: At peak, expect nuanced tertiary notes—dried flowers, forest floor, cigar box—while maintaining core fruit vibrancy.
Structure
- Acidity
- Medium to medium-plus; sufficient to counter rich fruit and oak and promote longevity.
- Tannins
- Firm, ripe, and polished; structure remains robust but well-integrated at this stage.
- Alcohol
- 14-14.5% ABV (typical for the estate and vintage)
- Aging potential
- Excellent for a modern Super Tuscan; easily 15-20+ years post-vintage, especially in good cellars.
Drinking window
- Peak drinking
- 2021 to 2030
- Optimal window
- 2017 to 2033
- Current status
- Mature, entering its optimal window but with a long plateau ahead.
- Current condition
- Showing integration of fruit, oak, and tertiary notes, but will remain enjoyable until at least 2033 for well-cellared bottles.
Super Tuscan blends of this tier, especially from a very good vintage, have the structure to age 15-20+ years. The 2013 is robust and balanced, and its Bordeaux varieties (especially Merlot and Cabernet) have proven extended age-worthiness in the region. This specific wine is known to show great composure and depth with age, and well-cellared examples will remain outstanding through at least 2033.
Food pairing
Ideal with bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb, roast wild game (venison or boar), mature hard cheeses, or dishes featuring porcini mushrooms and rich tomato sauces.
Serving
- Serving temperature
- 16-18°C / 61-64°F
- Decant
- Yes (1-2 hours) — To allow mature tannins to soften, integrate secondary/tertiary aromas, and open its complexity.
Sustainability
Sustainability score: 6/10
Orma employs integrated pest management, minimal use of chemical herbicides, and some organic farming techniques but is not certified. Focus on soil health and biodiversity in vineyard management. Water use is moderate, with traditional irrigation rather than advanced water-saving technology. Packaging uses standard glass bottles; lightweight options not in evidence.
Tenuta Orma shows commitment to sustainable viticulture through selective, low-intervention agricultural practices and preservation of terroir integrity, but lacks formal certification and significant investments in advanced sustainability (renewable energy, sophisticated water conservation, sustainable packaging). The wine’s export footprint to global markets also raises its carbon intensity compared to smaller, hyper-local producers. If sustainability is a key purchase driver, other certified organic/biodynamic Tuscan estates may score higher.
